Project Description
Gantry Plaza (EIC) – Long Island City, New York
Gantry Plaza State Park is a 12-acre riverside oasis that boasts spectacular views of the midtown Manhattan skyline, including the Empire State Building and the United Nations. The Park itself is built on an industrial relic of New York City’s history, dating back to 1925, when gantries were constructed in Long Island city to serve Long Island. As plans emerged to develop a new and exciting Long Island city riverfront, developers decided to create a park around these iconic relics. They aestheticized the environment by designing the park with refurbished gantries at its heart, borrowing the park’s name from the structures, and creating four elegant piers and other facilities around them. The result is undoubtedly the creation of a ‘jewel on the East River’.
From 1995 through 2015, Westfield Sheet Metal Works, Inc. has fabricated and installed various elements of architectural metal as the park has expanded and completed various phase’s. This includes the initial stainless steel handrail with IPE wood rail cap located at the historic Gantry Plaza at 48th Street and Center Boulevard. Our most recent installation involved the Light Pylons at the north end of the Gantry Plaza State Park. In between these two installations are numerous fabrications of architectural stainless steel that have made the Park a very popular public venue.
Fabrications for the Park are all made of type 316 stainless steel and have a glass bead finish. Elements fabricated and installed include bulkhead railing, IPE wood lounge chairs with stainless steel bases, a kiosk with IPE wood vertical siding and a stainless steel roof structure, custom bike racks, baseball field fencing and IPE wood seating, and garden trellis.
